Our Marketing and Communication team’s primary obligation is to tell the Non-GMO Project story by guiding, managing, and building our external messaging and communications. We have an eye for beautiful design and a knack for weaving together language and science to tell our unique story. We identify opportunities to expand our reach and build the non-GMO food supply through creating awareness, garnering support, and educating consumers. What We’re Looking For
We are looking for a motivated and thoughtful Social Media and Communications Assistant to join our team. In this role, you’ll work with the Marketing team to support communication and education around the GMO issue, the belief that food should nourish life, and the holistic mission and values of the Non-GMO Project. The Social Media and Communications Assistant will support the development and execution of engaging social media marketing campaigns across various platforms. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for managing and responding to inbound communications through social media and email, ensuring that inquiries and feedback are addressed promptly and professionally. Furthermore, the role includes providing comprehensive support for content production, which may encompass writing, editing, and curating materials that align with our organizational messaging. We are looking for a teammate who can use their creative thinking and ongoing learning to contribute to our marketing work. This role will report directly to the Social Media Specialist and will work with the Marketing team to advance our marketing and education efforts through innovative and collaborative work.
Areas of Responsibility
Community Engagement
- Moderate daily engagement across all social media platforms
- Respond promptly to comments, messages, and mentions
- Maintain authentic brand voice across distinct brands
- Foster community-strengthening conversations
- Manage communication inboxes with timely, helpful responses
Content Creation and Production
- Assist with editing and producing engaging content
- Help create unique content highlighting each of our brand’s unique identities
- Support implementation of campaign-aligned content
- Format content across platforms following established guidelines
Trend Monitoring
- Assist with social listening to identify emerging food systems conversations
- Research trending topics relevant to educational nonprofits
- Contribute to insights reporting
Support
- Help collect performance metrics across social media and communications
- Contribute to content calendars
- Organize brand assets as directed
- Follow established communication protocols and best practices

Experience You Bring
We place a high value on lived experience coupled with professional experience
- 1-3 years of experience in social media, digital marketing, or communications
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn)
- Proficiency with social media management and scheduling tools (Hootsuite, SproutSocial, Later, etc.)
- Experience creating and editing engaging visual content (photos, videos, graphics)
- Background in community management and audience engagement
- Familiarity with social media analytics and reporting
- Strong written communication skills with ability to adapt voice for different brands
- Experience with content calendar planning and management
- Knowledge of current social media trends and best practices
- Basic understanding of SEO principles for social content
- Experience in an educational, nonprofit, or food systems sector (preferred)
- Familiarity with video editing software and graphic design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a remote team environment
Current Benefit Package
- Health, vision, and dental insurance includes a wide range of medical insurance options to choose from. The Project contributes a flat rate ($450) which covers the base-level HSA medical plan in full. Employees have the option to opt into PPO/HMO plans.
